Storm Bora throws Greece into chaos (VIDEO)

Greek authorities remain on alert because of the Bora storm, which affected several areas of the country, especially the islands of Limnos and Rhodes. Meteorologists warn that the storms will continue until Tuesday, reports the local "Kathimerini".

Residents of the central part of mainland Greece were warned by the emergency number 112 to avoid going outside due to persistent storms and strong winds. Residents of the island of Rhodes have been told that the storm will continue to be strong on Monday morning and the ban on vehicular movement remains in place.

A vehicle ban has also been imposed on the island of Limnos due to the ongoing storms and damage already done to local roads. On the island of Limnos, two people died as a result of the floods.

Schools on the island of Rhodes and in Thessaloniki will also remain closed on Monday.

Rail transport between Athens and Thessaloniki was partially disrupted due to fallen trees and power outages. The Hellenic Train railway company reported significant delays.

According to the fire service, around 25 firefighters from Athens were sent as backup to the island of Limnos and another 35 to Rhodes.

Forecasters warned that the storm "Bora" is expected to bring heavy snowfall to Western Macedonia and the mountainous regions of Epirus (northwest).

Collision of ships in Thessaloniki

A cargo ship moored at the port of Thessaloniki broke loose due to strong winds in the area on Sunday and collided with another cargo ship, it was also reported. "Kathimerini", referring to the port authorities.

The collision caused material damage to both ships. According to the Coast Guard, no one was injured and no signs of sea pollution were found.

The Central Port Authority of Thessaloniki is conducting a preliminary investigation into the incident.

Torrential rains flooded homes, businesses and roads on the popular Greek tourist island of Rhodes over the weekend as Bora raged in full force.

The fire service received more than 650 calls to pump water from flooded buildings on the island of Rhodes and evacuated 80 people to safer ground, with the town of Ialyssos the worst affected.

Storm Bora was preceded by a long dry spell with unusually high temperatures. Such extreme weather conditions are expected to occur more often in the future as climate change makes them more likely, Greek authorities said.
